Christine McCusker, Canada

Associate professor

Montreal Children's Hospital, McGill University Health Center

Biologic therapies are now used for a myriad of different diseases.  While the positive effects of therapy have been studied, little is known regarding the long-term complications arising from these therapies. Prior to therapy what questions should be asked, during therapy what are the patient-specific risks and post therapy when does immunity return to baseline?  Understanding what each class of therapy is design to do will enable the practitioner to tailor interventions to specific patient needs.

As a result of attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the effect of biologics on immune responses (Anti-lymphocyte, anti-cytokine, cell activation inhibitors)
  • Address Mechanisms of action and Known duration of compromise
  • Develop a proactive approach for monitoring patients treated with biologics
